Metal Foil Full Bridge Strain Gauges Custom Design Four Grids
A full bridge strain gauge circuit (also known as Wheatstone full bridge) is the most widely used configuration for strain measurement, pressure detection and force sensing. It consists of four active strain gauges connected to form a closed Wheatstone bridge. This design delivers outstanding sensitivity, temperature compensation and anti-interference performance, and is the core sensing unit of truck axle scales, load cells and various precision weighing devices.
Working Principle
When external force is applied, the surface of the measured object deforms. The four strain gauges attached to it produce tensile or compressive strain:
Two gauges are stretched (resistance increases), while the other two are compressed (resistance decreases).
The resistance change unbalances the bridge circuit, generating a measurable output voltage.
The tiny voltage signal is amplified and converted into accurate weight or strain data by subsequent circuits.
Key Features
High Measurement Sensitivity
Compared with quarter bridge and half bridge, the full bridge outputs the strongest signal under the same strain. It effectively captures micro-deformation and ensures high weighing precision.
Automatic Temperature Compensation
All four gauges are exposed to the same ambient temperature. Temperature-induced resistance drift offsets each other inside the bridge, eliminating measurement errors caused by temperature changes.
Strong Anti-Interference Ability
It resists electromagnetic interference and mechanical vibration, maintaining stable performance in complex outdoor and industrial environments.
Good Linear Performance
The output voltage has an excellent linear relationship with the applied load, guaranteeing consistent accuracy across the full measuring range.
Main Advantages in Weighing Equipment
Minimizes zero drift and long-term drift, suitable for long-time continuous work.
Adapts to harsh conditions like rain, dust and variable temperature, ideal for portable axle scales and on-site weighing tools.
Simplifies circuit design for signal processing, helping equipment achieve compact structure and reliable operation.
Common Applications
Load cells for vehicle axle scales, platform scales and truck weighers
Industrial force sensors, pressure transmitters and torque detectors
Structural stress testing for machinery, engineering vehicles and buildings
